Expression of Love

Some of you might have heard of the 5 Love Languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch.

For those who may be in the dark, these are various expressions of love that can be conveyed between people in relationships.

Words of Affirmation involves praise or recognition for the task or act that was done.

Acts of Service would be doing chores or helping the other with daily tasks.

Receiving Gifts is pretty much like it sounds. They appreciate when others take time out to find a gift for them.

Quality Time involves giving your undivided attention to someone, making the person feel appreciated and important.

Physical Touch would involve those who value displays of affection such as hugs, a reassuring squeeze of a hand or a pat on the shoulder.

It’s only natural that each individual person expresses themselves differently. I’m sure we all have family members, friends or significant others – and we just think, “What in the world? I’m not feeling very loved right now.” I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Some of us need undivided attention or physical affection from our loved ones to feel appreciated and if that person is you, I can bet that you’ve been frustrated when that particular loved one is distracted or distant.

Maybe you’re someone who love giving gifts to someone. Let’s say your spouse isn’t that way; maybe he/she shows love by acts of service. So you could be disappointed when you’re not receiving gifts in return – but the dishes and laundry are done.

Miscommunication happens more often than not in any relationship. And personally, I find it amusing when, as Christians, we are always frustrated or shocked when communicating with God seems very similar at times.

We pray. We read. We talk with other believers. And we expect immediate displays of love or instant responses from a God that sometimes tells us to be patient or just simply says, “No.”

How many times have we asked for immediate answers with taking a job? Dating a guy? Moving away? Answering a potential calling?  Saying, “God, just give me a sign!”

Maybe it’s not even a question of if you should do something; it’s just asking God for it to happen because it’s something that you really want. Trust me, I know how that is.

And we can get frustrated with a seeming lack of response of the lack of love we’re used to with other people in our lives. But, in all reality, God is actually the ultimate communicator. He communicates through all love languages because His love is that unconditional and that powerful.

He shows us when we’re shining His light and making Him proud – and he tells us when we need to evaluate where we are in the process.

He helps us through our daily tasks and is always by our side.

He gifts us with His unfailing love, making us clean when we wrestle with sin.

He spends one-on-one time with us; He never stops paying attention and focuses completely on what we say or how we feel. He’s in tune with our emotions and thoughts.

He touches our hearts and souls and makes us pure and holy, reaching out always – but, especially when we need it the most. He heals the broken pieces and makes us whole.

And the ultimate expression of love? Well, that was all planned by Him, too – His only Son, sent to save us from our sin. When Jesus died on the Cross, he wasn’t doing that for his sake, but for ours. He was perfect and resisted temptation, resisted sin. We were dirty and unclean, but He deemed us worthy of His sacrifice. How can we even comprehend a love that unconditional? That powerful?

He continuously shows us over and over again that He is the perfect father, the perfect friend, the perfect confidant and the master of expressing love – no matter how tough it may be to accept at times.

And I will forever be grateful for Him in every way for everything He has done for me – and everything He’s yet to do, everything He has planned. Because one day, there will be no more hate, no more pain. There will only be love.

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us

Romans 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
